How It Is Worked Out
- Average weekly earnings must be at least £129, the lower earnings limit for 2026/27. Below that there is no SMP, and the employee may be able to claim Maternity Allowance.
- Weeks 1 to 6 are paid at 90% of average weekly earnings, with no upper limit.
- Weeks 7 to 39 are paid at £194.32, or at 90% of average weekly earnings if that is lower.
- Each week's amount is rounded up to the next penny.
The calculator assumes the employee has the 26 weeks' service needed to qualify, and that all 39 weeks fall in 2026/27. Average weekly earnings come from a specific eight-week period before the qualifying week: see Statutory Maternity Pay 2026/27: how it is calculated.
